Dear readers,

It’s nearing the end of September and now that we’ve had a few weeks to settle into school and our routines, the SMU Women’s Centre is ready to begin this school year with excitement and happiness! In the first few weeks of school we set up a table at Society Day and the Volunteer Fair on campus. We received so much interest and support! Here is an ongoing list of events that are coming up:

Ongoing:
SMU facebook page needs more “likes”! We’re currently hosting a contest to see if we can get more fans on our facebook page! All you have to do is “like” our page and you will automatically be entered into a draw! Share our link on facebook to get your friends to join too!

September 28th, 2011:Join us for our Open House! We’re located on the 5th floor of the Student Union building on campus. The Open House runs from 11:00-4:00pm.

September 30th, 2011:Take Back The Night is happen at 6:00pm-9:00pm meeting first at The Commons and then marching downtown. This is an event that brings attention to the fact that women should be able to walk at night without having to be fearful. It also brings light to victim blaming. The rally and following reception are ally-friendly but the march is solely for women-identified people.

As most of you have already heard, last week we were informed that a pro-life group, Students 4 Life was ratified as a society by the SMU Student Association (SMUSA). This is the same group of students that organized the Jose Ruba talk Echoes of the Holocaust last year, which was an upsetting event for many of the people in attendance and showed a clear disregard for women’s and human rights. Groups who are dedicated to working for the removal of women’s legal rights to abortion should not be allowed on the SMU campus.

We will be attending the SMUSA Board of Directors meeting this Friday, March 12 at 4:30pm. All interested students are encouraged to come out and show that they do not support SMUSA ratifying an anti-choice/pro-life group. We will be meeting in the Women’s Centre at 4pm.

In the meantime, we need your help in showing SMUSA that the student and broader community do not support their decision. We encourage you to call or write to the President of SMUSA and members of the Board of Directors to express your opposition. We also strongly encourage groups and organizations to write letters and endorse our campaign against the ratification of pro-life groups on campuses. See here for some arguments to use in your letter.
